I think there has to be a balance between keyword research and writing naturally – you say in your post: “which words would you put into a browser to get that info” but I know I would search in a much different way to my friends or my family so a basic keyword tool is always helpful.
Then, when you are getting traffic to a page, look into your analytics to see how people are finding the page and then optimise further for those terms by tweaking the content and building a few links containing these terms.
